Soundtrack4Life: the B-Sides

Natalie Merchant

On Wednesday we are going to see Natalie Merchant at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh. Very excited about this as it has been many years since I last saw her in concert. Here's a few videos that demonstrate just how good she is.

A Country Moment with Miranda Lambert

No, you have not stumbled onto the wrong page. Soundtrack4Life is taking a moment to celebrate the music of Miranda Lambert. Country music is not something you think that I would like but you haven't seen the amount of the stuff that's loaded on my iPod!

Greyhound Bound For Nowhere (on Nashville Star)

Miranda Lambert first came to light in 2003 when she came third in the 'Nashville Star, after the show she signed to Epic Records and released a fantastic major label debut with 'Kerosene'(she had released an independant album back in 2001).

Kerosene

Her second, 'Crazy ex-Girlfriend' brought a stack of hits and awards and included the brilliant 'Famous in a Small Town' and 'Gunpowder and Lead'.

In 2009 she released 'Revolution', which again she received honors for, including the Album of the Year at the ACM 2010 Awards and Female Vocalist of the Year for the third year running.

The House That Built Me

The Ruts - West One

If you could pick only one song by The Ruts out all their recorded output that you believe defines who they were, what would that song be? I can imagine that most people would be rushing to the side of either 'In A Rut' (their debut single) or the absolute classic that is 'Babylon's Burning'. Whilst I love those two songs they probably would not make it to my shortlist.

My shortlist would include: 'S.U.S', 'Savage Circle', 'Jah Wars', 'It Was Cold', 'Society' and 'West One (Shine On Me)' - only two of which were singles (and one a b-side). But the hands down winner would be 'West One'

With Rollins on vocals

Rollins said that this song was the best ever on the subject of loneliness and isolation and he's spot on.

The Spazzy's

I have to admit to not really knowing anything about The Spazzys except that they come from Melbourne, Australia. They formed in 2000 and have released one album ('Aloha! Go Bananas' in 2004) and a handful of singles and EP's. I stumbled across them yesterday on You Tube whilst watching a video of Chris Bailey of The Saints and The Spazzys were singing 'My Boyfriend's Back' with him.

With Chis Bailey (Australian TV)

In the light of that I thought I'd search around some more and find more of their music. They are almost like an early version of The Donnas and a female Ramones. It's actually quite fun music.

Sin City - The Flying Burrito Brothers

I started to read the book a while back and then when we moved house packed it away. Just picked it up again today and thought I'd plough my way through it.

He actually put out some fantastic music which I didn't really appreciate until a couple of years ago when I got hold of an anthology of his music.

Slade

I'll dedicate this posting to all of those who loved Slade when they were growing up, especially my mate Leighton. For some odd reason Slade ended up getting mixed in with all the Glam rockers of the day. But when you look at those bands only Sweet came anywhere close to being as good as Noddy Holder and the boys.

So, 'Lock Up Your Daughters', 'Cum on Feel the Noize' with a hearty splash of Black Country Rock and Roll!

A little bit different but I just loved these guys way back before they became one of the biggest bands on the planet. I got to work with them when this album came out back in late 1979 and early 1980.

The Alarm Release the Pressure Tour

The Alarm have just completed their 'Release the Pressure Tour' and man were they in fine form. It's crazy that they don't get the kudos they so deserve. Their latest album 'Direct Action' was not even mentioned in any of the top music magazines! A scandal I reckon. Judge for yourself if Mike Peters and his band don't deserve a few breaks to come their way.

All these videos were shot on the recent tour.

Here's something special. Bruce & the East Street Band had been performing a number of different albums throughout the 'Working on a Dream' Tour and on this particular night they played 'The River' in sequence.

So here are all the videos from that show of 'The River'. I am grateful to bruchee over on You Tube for providing us with a great record of that night.
