Was having a blast this morning watching some Paul Weller vids on You Tube and thought it was about time I did a blog focusing on the man himself. I am a huge fan of The Jam and like many folks was disappointed when they split. When he put together the Style Council I thought the first couple of sings were top notch but they were not really my cup of tea the longer they progressed. The single he released under the banner of The Paul Weller Movement I thought was much better.

A year and a half on from that Weller unvieled himself as a Solo Artist with a great wee single 'Uh Huh Oh Yeah'

Glen’s latest album, Born Running, recorded with his band The Philistines, offers up twelve more punchy and direct examples of Matlock’s innate ability to craft timeless, melodic rock songs. It has an added poignancy insofar as it features the last recordings of guitarist Steve New, one of Matlock’s oldest friends and fellow founder-member of The Rich Kids, who died in 2010. Also in the band’s line up is drummer Javier Weyler, the current drumming incumbent with The Stereophonics, as well as guitarist James Stevenson, who, like Matlock, is a musical survivor from the original School of ’76 British Punk Rock. The album was produced by Jim Lowe, who has produced numerous hugely successful albums for The Stereophonics. Born Running is the latest salvo from a musician and songwriter who is never satisfied with resting on his considerable musical achievements; there is much more to come from this hugely gifted individual.

Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band: Madison Square Gardens 7/11/2009

Noting that there were only eight shows left on the tour, Bruce paused before the sixth song of his set on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden to say that he and the band appreciated the support of their fans over the past few years and that they wanted to do something that was a "nice treat for the fans and for us."

So began the first-ever top-to-bottom performance of 'The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle'. Bruce shushed the audience, tapped a baton against his microphone stand and turned to face the horn section (set up on the back riser behind the piano) to conduct them as "The E Street Shuffle" kicked off an amazing seven-song performance. Bruce completely followed through on his intent to treat the audience, as he unquestionably went above and beyond to ensure a performance that did his second album proud.

"Tonight! One time only!" — the Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. album, start to finish. "This was the miracle," he said, "This was the record that took everything from way below zero to... one." That got a big laugh. Bruce went on to speak of John Hammond, "one of the great legends of music production," and of manager Mike Appel, whose "incredible talking" got him a crucial audition with said legend. Tonight's album performance was dedicated "to the man who got me in the door. Mike Appel is here tonight — Mike, this is for you." He added, "We've never done it... hope we can do it!"

I was caught up listening to Kirsty's superb 'From Croydon to Cuba Anthology' today and thought it was about time for a Kirsty Playlist. She did so many great songs over the years of her life and in very varied musical styles.

What is quite staggering about her musical output is that she did not have as many hits as you first suppose. Some of her finer songs even failed to break into even the lower reaches of the Charts and a few of them never even made it at all ('They Don't Know', 'Terry', 'He's On The Beach', 'Free World', 'Innocence', 'Don't Come the Cowboy With Me Sonny Jim!', 'My Affair', and 'In These Shoes').

Of course she did have some hits: 'There's a Guy Who Works Down the Chip Shop Who Swears He's Elvis' (#14), 'A New England' (#7), 'Fairytale of New York' with The Pogues (#2 and then again #3 when reissued in 2005), and 'Days' (#12).

Her albums didn't fare any better with only 'Galore' (a best of) breaking the Top Ten. 'Electric Landlady' was the only one of her studio albums to break the Top 20 (#17).

Miranda Lambert first came to light in 2003 when she came third in the 'Nashville Star, after the show she signed to Epic Records and released a fantastic major label debut with 'Kerosene'(she had released an independant album back in 2001).

If you could pick only one song by The Ruts out all their recorded output that you believe defines who they were, what would that song be? I can imagine that most people would be rushing to the side of either 'In A Rut' (their debut single) or the absolute classic that is 'Babylon's Burning'. Whilst I love those two songs they probably would not make it to my shortlist.

My shortlist would include: 'S.U.S', 'Savage Circle', 'Jah Wars', 'It Was Cold', 'Society' and 'West One (Shine On Me)' - only two of which were singles (and one a b-side). But the hands down winner would be 'West One'

I have to admit to not really knowing anything about The Spazzys except that they come from Melbourne, Australia. They formed in 2000 and have released one album ('Aloha! Go Bananas' in 2004) and a handful of singles and EP's. I stumbled across them yesterday on You Tube whilst watching a video of Chris Bailey of The Saints and The Spazzys were singing 'My Boyfriend's Back' with him.

The Alarm have just completed their 'Release the Pressure Tour' and man were they in fine form. It's crazy that they don't get the kudos they so deserve. Their latest album 'Direct Action' was not even mentioned in any of the top music magazines! A scandal I reckon.
